Initially after splitting on bad terms with Black Sabbath, it seemed like Dio came out the better of the two parties. While Iommi and Co. soon embarked on a decade of relative obscurity, Dio became, for a few years, a metal superstar as a solo artist. Holy Diver is a huge reason why: a classic album, start to finish, with slashing riffs from a young Vivian Campbell, untouchable drumming from Vinny Appice, and of course RJD's own inimitable vocals and mystical, medieval lyrics. Interestingly, as much as he liked to use so-called "evil" imagery, Dioi's message is ultimately positive, singing of truth-seeking, self-discovery, perseverance and inner strength. Although the title track is lyrically pretty silly (and its two-minute "spooky" intro of wind and chimes is way too long), it's tough to fault anything else on the album. "Stand Up And Shout," "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark" are metal classics, but deeper cuts like "Gypsy," "Straight Through The Heart" and the poetic "Don't Tal
