Stripped down, in-your-face, crushing music akin to an attack with a blunt object. That being said, I like the production a lot better than the tunes, to me not enough hooks, but well worth it for the bludgeoning factor alone...

A different sound with Jason on Bass(they turned the bass down to fuck with him). I lopve the riffs as usual and the Shortest Straw and Frayed ends of Sanity solos are my favorites. You can definatly tell Joe Satriani gave lessons to Hammett especially on the Eye Of the Beholder solo. A solid album but not there best.

From: Chris Date: June 6, 2004 at 5:29
My favorite Metallica album! Progressive thrash at its finest! From the crushing riffs of Blackened (my second favorite Metallica song next to Damage Inc.), the legendary ending solo of One, the catchy and very heavy Shortest Straw, and the super-fast Dyers Eve, what's not to like about this album?

From: Shannon Date: June 19, 2004 at 23:44
THIS & MASTER OF PUPPETS ARE MY FAVORITES FROM METALLICA. THIS IS WHEN THEY WERE IN THEIR PRIME.

From: Carpet-Muncher Date: July 2, 2004 at 5:48
This sounds awful. Recorded and mixed by a deaf person there is NO Bass and the drums sound like plastic cartons. The appalling sound totally destrys the songs which sound bloated and weak. Had they given this album a powerhouse mix akin to Ride to Lightning or the Black Album-this would be their finest.

From: Big Papa K Date: July 7, 2004 at 22:02
A step down here. The production is once again awful, with no bass and the terrible drum sound. The songs are the longest of their careers, but unlike the last album, they include many boring moments. Still, there is enough on here ("One", "Harvester Of Sorrow") that it is still worth the purchase. 8/10

From: ti pénis Date: July 17, 2004 at 14:30
ONE???? trop racing

Although the sound quality is preety crap (u cant here the bass one bit, the drums sound kind of thin), but this is, in my opinion, the best Metallica album. James Hetfield sings really good, Kirk does some killer solos (One,Blackend, Dyers Eve...), and some killer riffs. Definetly their best album!!

From: CLIFF BURTON Date: September 8, 2004 at 19:41
I wish I was alive when they recorded that album. Why did I have to die in 1986? Why not after justice.

From: GLAM FAN Date: April 18, 2005 at 7:49
This album is More similar to ride the lightning than to master of puppet! I would consider metallica to be the best thrash/speed metal band of all time because this is metallica's fourth classic, unbeatable album. Definitely more progressive sounding and more ambitious than their previous 3 album, justice for all got extremely complex and good songwriting and the songs here are metallica's most consistent. One is one of 80's metal finest epic while blackened and harvester of sorrow are

shamefully underrated. Not a single filler is found on this album. An excellent master piece. Ratings:9.5/10

No se contentaron con sacar esa tremendo JOYA llamada MASTER OF PUPPETS y enseguida sacan otra JOYA llamada AND JUSTICE.. Tanto éste como el MASTER OF PUPPETS son sus obras más completas de METALLICA sin lugar a dudas. IMPRESIONANTE, que mas.. NADA. TU MISMO. 10/10

this was the first metallica album i ever heard so it holds a special place in my heart blackened had me from the start what a great song as is the title track, one harverster of sorrow, shortest straw and the underated frayed ends of sanity the bass was horribly turned down jason is on record as saying this wasn't a good album for him and the production is lacking but it's a great album the last of the real metallica after this they would divede opinion forever for me the black album was good even though it's commercial and yes they sold out but they sucked after that and became close to the biggest tossers in the world it pains me to say

This is an intriguing album. My introdcution to Metallica, first via the "One" video, then by an older kid at summer camp. No way was I ready for this at the time, a kid into stuff like Skid Row and Winger at the time. The first thing that jumps out at you is that weird production. The bass, or lack thereof, is obvious, but what about that odd, buzzing guitar tone. When "Hold my breath as I wish for death" kicked, that guitar sound was like nothing I'd ever heard, and at the time, I thought they must be playing with special strings made of some secret alloy to have those tones. And then there's Lars's stiff, strangely almost robotic drum sound. Then you got the songs themselves, mostly long, convoluted journeys with multiple sections that wouldn't seem to have aything to do with each other. This band had clearly come a long, long way from Kill 'Em All. A challenging album, to say the least, and one I didn't warm to for a very long time. There really isn't a song on it I don'dt like kno

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 6, 2014 at 23:24
Not a song I don't like nowadays, although the title track and "To Live Is To Die" go on for too long. Favorites would be "Blackened," "Eye Of The Beholder," "The Shortest Straw" and "Ders' Eve." And of course, "One," which is still a very powerful song, and unfairly crucified at the time due to the video. ("But they said they'd never make a fuckin' video! They PROMISED!") You can't help but feel your mood change, upon hearing those first four notes.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 7, 2014 at 17:18
Another thought about "One": that song has to be the unlikeliest top-40 hit ever. It seemed surreal at the time, and no less so 25 years later, that you could turn on American Top 40 with Casey Kasemm, or whoever was hosting by that point, and hear "One," in the middle of the Fine Young Cannibals, Paula Abdul, Roxette and Debbie Gibson. Granted, it only went to #35 or #34, and was only inside the top-40 for about three weeks, but still! (The band actually hit #31 two decades later with another slow-to-heavy, seven-minute epic, but this time, it wasn't even a very good song.)

Saw them live on this Tour in lovely U.K.(support act was Danzig)..."One" is by far the best cut of the album and a complete metal hymn...some other fine moments are tracks 1,3,6 & 7...recommended stuff.90/100
