Albums like ReliXIV and Immortalis seemed a bit lacking, but beginning with Ironbound, Overkill has delivered four absolute knockout punches in a row! So here's the latest, and it's prime-cut, Grade-A, tried-and-true Overkill. Blitz is not dodging the question or being glib when he says the best way to describe the new record is that "it sounds like Overkill." The mai difference is in the length of the songs: they're starting to creep up there again, sending the album as a whole over the 60-minute mark. Even if a simpler, punkier track like "Goddamn Trouble" is longer than you would expect, songs rarely outstay their welcome and contain enough moving parts to keep you engaged. More than any other, Overkill truly are the AC/DC of thrash. Highlights are "Mean Green Killing Machine," "Goddamn Trouble," "Our Finest Hour," "Come Heavy," "Red White And Blue" and the surprise Thin Lizzy cover "Emerald."

Also of note, the record is mixed by Andy Sneap, which results in a slightly different sound from the past half-dozen or so self-produced albums. But it's not as dramatic a difference as, say, his remix of Nevermore's Enemies Of Reality--and nor does it need to be. I wondder why they even spent the money on him, when they've been sounding just fine on their own.
